What is Fringe Nerdology?

Fringe Nerdology

This blog is intended for people interested in the application of technical concepts to non-traditional cases. Think of it as the frontier, or fringe, of where we are with technology and our understanding how we apply technology to our everyday life.

Some of my ideas are far fetched. Some are impractical. Some are probably even really, really dumb. But they are all things that have interested me at one time or another. By sharing these ideas, I hope to generate thought, discussion and maybe even inspiration to the people who come across this blog.

Who I Am

I am a software engineer by trade. This probably will become apparent throughout this blog, as I tend to use software applications as examples in my writing. Hopefully this habit will not become terribly boring.

I am also into fitness. I have been a certified personal trainer for a few years, but I have been interested in fitness for nearly 20 years. My evolution was started when I wrestled in high school, evolved to strength training during college and then to running in my early 20's and ending where I am now: triathlon. As a casual athlete, I enjoy being active and I attempt to use science to help me perform better (more on that in a later blog post - spoiler alert: it is an exciting area with little research).

What I Attempt to Do

While my main goal is to document and share some of the ideas I have (and hopefully promote good discussion), I will try to explain technical concepts in easy to understand terms. My intent is to share information - and with that mission comes the responsibility to make the information understandable. I will try to apply the "mother test" to concepts that may be technical in nature or hard to understand. The "mother test" is something that I use when I write software; essentially, if my mother can't understand it, can't use it or can't tolerate it, then the idea needs to be simplified, refined or abandoned. This guideline has served me well over the past several years, both professionally as well as personally.

My Writing Style

My aim is to be very informal and provide an inviting atmosphere with this blog. Writing in an informal manner affords me an easy way to get my thoughts out quickly, with the understanding that refinement happens later. As such, it is very likely that I will omit details or critical pieces of information. Please, feel free to ask me to clarify anything that is unclear or call me out for providing false information! Grammar notes are also appreciated.
